Achiote Oil

Achiote Oil

  • 1 cup achiote seeds (seed from the lipstick plant; also known as annatto or achuete)
  • 2 cups vegetable oil


  1. In a saucepan, combine seeds and oil.
  2. Cook over low heat for 5 minutes or until oil is a rich red color; strain and discard seeds.
  3. Store oil in a covered glass container in the refrigerator.

Makes 2 cups.

Approximate Nutrient Analysis per 1 tablespoon serving:
120 calories, 14 g fat, 1 g saturated fat, 0 mg cholesterol, 0 mg sodium, 0 g carbohydrate, 0 g fiber, 0 g sugar, 0 g protein
