Easy Baked Char Siu Bao

Ingredients:

Easy Baked Char Siu Bao

  • Non-stick cooking spray
  • 1 (16-ounce) package yeast bread mix, such as Bob’s Red Mill
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 3/4 pound char siu, diced
  • 3 tablespoons chopped green onions
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons sugar
  • 4 teaspoons shoyu
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons flour
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup water
  • Honey for basting

Directions:

  1. Heat oven to 400°F.
  2. Coat a baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray; set aside.
  3. Prepare bread mix according to package directions.
  4. In a saucepan, heat oil on medium high and stir fry char siu for 30 seconds.
  5. Add onions, sugar, shoyu and salt.
  6. In a small bowl, mix flour and cornstarch with water.
  7. Stir into char siu.
  8. Cook until mixture thickens; cool.
  9. Knead dough on a floured board until no longer sticky, about 1 to 2 minutes.
  10. Divide dough into 12 equal-sized pieces and flatten.
  11. Put a tablespoon of char siu mixture in center of each; form buns by pulling dough up and around filling.
  12. Pinch to seal seams.
  13. Place on prepared baking sheet.
  14. Cover loosely with a towel and let rise until doubled.
  15. Bake buns for 13 to 15 minutes.
  16. Brush tops with honey while hot.

Makes 12 buns.
