Selling Power to the Utility

Multiday-Duration Energy Storage and Non-Wires Alternative Utility-Scale or Distributed Energy Resource Grid Services EOIs

May 12, 2022

Hawaiian Electric is seeking feedback on two Expression of Interests. The Multiday-Duration Energy Storage Services Expression of Interest (“Storage EOI”) is for developers interested in developing cost competitive multiday-duration energy storage projects on Oahu, Maui and Hawaii Island. The Oahu Non-Wires Alternative Utility-Scale or Distributed Energy Resource Grid Services Expression of Interest (“NWA EOI”) is also available which is focused in central Oahu.

Multiday-Duration Energy Storage EOI

Through the Storage EOI, Hawaiian Electric is expecting to need multiday energy and capacity resources to provide reliability services and is seeking to assess whether other technologies could potentially fulfill these needs in addition to firm generation resources. Responses to this EOI will assist the companies in developing long-range renewable energy plans and informing future and upcoming competitive procurements on Oahu, Maui and Hawaii Island.

Developers or aggregators who are capable of developing utility-scale renewable projects or aggregating DER/EE in the central and west area of Oahu are encouraged to submit comprehensive responses to this request. General performance requirements are provided in the EOI.
