Hawaiian Electric to use drones as a wildfire safety tool on Lanai

As part of its ongoing wildfire safety strategy, Hawaiian Electric is using unmanned aircrafts, or drones, for aerial inspections within Maui County, Hawaii Island and Oahu to inspect its electrical infrastructure in identified wildfire risk areas. Drone and field inspections are slated to start on Lanai on Monday, Dec. 2 until Monday, Dec. 23.

Hawaiian Electric and conservation groups reach settlement to protect imperiled seabirds

On October 30, 2024, Hawaiian Electric reached a three-year agreement with Conservation Council for Hawaii and American Bird Conservancy, which are represented by Earthjustice, to provide additional, immediate protections for endangered and threatened Hawaiian seabirds in Maui County while the utility works with wildlife agencies on longer-term solutions. In a settlement with the conservation groups, Hawaiian Electric has committed to several measures in addition to those it has already taken aimed at reducing the risk of harm to seabirds posed by collisions with the company's power lines on Maui and Lanai.

Hawaiian Electric continues to advance wildfire safety efforts

Since launching its expanded wildfire safety strategy one year ago, Hawaiian Electric has made significant improvements that have reduced the wildfire risk from its equipment. Its actions include a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) program, replacing and testing thousands of utility poles, upgrading miles of overhead power lines, clearing intrusive vegetation near electrical equipment, and installing weather stations and AI-assisted high definition video cameras.
