Welcome to The Electric Garage! Getting more folks out of their gas-burning cars and into electric vehicles will go a long way toward helping Hawaii meet its ambitious decarbonization goals. Hawaiian Electric is deeply committed to this effort and is continually looking for ways to provide customers with the tools they need to take part in this transformation.
The Electric Garage provides another channel for Hawaiian Electric to engage with its customers and keep them informed as EV technologies evolve and the automakers increase their offering of EV models. There will be speed bumps as we forge ahead but Hawaiian Electric stands ready to serve as a trusted resource to its customers on this journey.

Miki, an Autonomous Electric Passenger Shuttle, introduced at Honolulu Airport
April 16, 2024 – In a move towards sustainability, the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) unveiled Miki, a new autonomous electric passenger shuttle at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL). It's set to complement the existing Wiki Wiki shuttle bus service. Named after the Hawaiian word for “agile,” the department says Miki aims to offer travelers an additional transportation option in the airport.

Musk makes surprise visit to Beijing as Tesla’s China-made cars pass data security rules
April 28, 2024 – Local Chinese authorities have removed restrictions on Tesla cars after the company’s China-made vehicles passed the country’s data security requirements, the automaker said Sunday. The breakthrough came as Tesla CEO Elon Musk arrived in Beijing for an unexpected meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, amid the first major auto show in the city in four years.

California reaches EV charging infrastructure milestone
April 28, 2024 – California has reached a key milestone in the development of its electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, with the Governor’s office over the weekend highlighting that the state now has one charging station for every five gas stations.

University investigates dynamic wireless charging for electric vehicles
April 26, 2024 – Coventry University is investigating the potential of using metal coils fitted below the road surface to recharge electric vehicles (EVs) on the move. The feasibility study called Dynacov – short for dynamic charging of vehicles – uses dynamic wireless transfer technology to establish a connection between subscribing vehicles and a charge delivered from the road surface.

5 ways cities can accelerate EV charger deployments equitably
April 24, 2024 – As more electric vehicles get on the road, cities and counties are considering how to equitably build out the public charging infrastructure needed to power such vehicles. The third quarter 2023 report on EV charging infrastructure trends from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory identifies some of the current charging disparities: Fewer public chargers are available in rural areas and disadvantaged communities compared with suburban and wealthier areas, for example.

Mercedes-Benz finally unveils its electric G-Class luxury off-roader
April 24, 2024 – Back in 2022, Mercedes-Benz announced that it was going to release an electric G-Class by the end of 2024. Now, the automaker has formally introduced the electrified version of its iconic luxury vehicle that's known for its exclusivity.
