Chinese New Year Gao

Recipe compliments of Beverly K. S. Mau, Palolo Chinese Home.


Ingredients:

Chinese New Year Gao

  • Non-stick cooking spray
  • 1 ¼ cup water
  • 1 (16-ounce) package won tong (Chinese brown sugar, available in Chinatown) or 1 (16-ounce) box dark brown sugar
  • 1 (13.5-ounce) can coconut milk
  • ¼ cup canola oil
  • 1 (16-ounce) box mochiko (mochi flour)
  • 1 ½ tablespoons sesame seeds toasted
  • 8 red dates

Directions:

  1. Coat a 7-by-5-inch round microwave safe pan with cooking spray.
  2. In a medium pot, boil water with won tong or dark brown sugar until sugar dissolves; cool.
  3. Add coconut milk and oil; mix well.
  4. Gradually stir in mochiko with sugar-water-coconut milk mixture until smooth.
  5. Pour batter in pan and cover loosely with plastic wrap.
  6. Microwave on high for 16 minutes.
  7. Sprinkle with sesame seeds on top.
  8. Place red dates on top.
  9. Cool.

Serves 20.
