Work scheduled weekdays only, 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Release Date: 9/24/2020
HONOLULU, Sept. 24, 2020 – Starting Monday, Sept. 28, to Friday, Oct. 23, Hawaiian Electric contractors will be installing concrete foundations for new utility structures in the Waahila Ridge State Recreation Area as part of a phased upgrade to improve resilience in East Oahu.
The work will require the daily closure of the parking lot and hiking trails, 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., except weekends and holidays. At times, a helicopter will be used to transport equipment and materials to the work site located high on the ridge trail. The temporary closure will ensure the safety of recreational hikers and mountain bikers who are urged to exercise extreme caution when the trail is available during this period.
The public can check the Na Ala Hele Trail & Access Program website (https://hawaiitrails.hawaii.gov/trails/#/) for updates on the trail closure days, which are subject to change without notice.
Special security detail will be onsite to direct the public.
The next phase of the project will be the installation of the new steel structures to replace the existing aluminum towers.
