Utility work in the McCully-Ala Wai area will require lane and street closures
Work scheduled July 16-21
Release Date: 7/14/2017
HONOLULU, July 14, 2017 - Hawaiian Electric Company crews will be upgrading the power distribution system on Sunday, July 16 through Friday, July 21, from the intersection of Lime and McCully streets in Honolulu to and along Ala Wai Boulevard in Waikiki.
From July 16 to 21, Hawaiian Electric crews will be replacing two utility poles on Lime Street, near the intersection of Lime and McCully streets. Crews will relocate power lines onto the new poles, after which Hawaiian Telcom crews will relocate communications lines. For the safety of the public and the crews, this will require that on July 16 one makai lane of traffic be closed on Lime Street between Pumehana and McCully streets. On July 17 to 21 one-half block of Lime Street will be closed to all traffic on both sides of the McCully Street intersection. The work will take place between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
During that same time period, Hawaiian Electric crews will be replacing underground power lines, which will require access into manholes and hand holes situated on roadways. For the safety of the public and the crews, this will require traffic lane closures, bicycle lane closures, and parallel parking lane closures. The work will be intermittent and will not require lane closures at all work areas each day of the week. The work hours will be between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., except one evening as noted below.
The underground power line work includes four manholes on McCully Street: near the Lime Street intersection, makai of the Kapiolani Boulevard intersection, at the beginning of the McCully bridge leading to Waikiki, and makai of the Ala Wai Boulevard intersection.
The work will also require access to manholes and to hand holes along the mauka side of Ala Wai Boulevard from McCully Street to Kaiolu Street and also on Kaiolu Street for a half block.
In addition to the daytime work, the evening work will take place on Wednesday, July 19, from 7:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m., at the intersection of Ala Wai Boulevard and Kalaimoku Street, and on Kaiolu Street.
Traffic signs and cones will mark the work areas. Flagmen, aided by special duty police officers, will help direct traffic flow. Hawaiian Electric wants to advise motorists of the closures and apologizes for the inconvenience to area residents and individuals using the roadways.
