The goal of Hawaiian Electric Company's new Demand Response for Business program is to help keep the electric grid stable and prevent unplanned outages when electricity demand may exceed generation capacity. Customers enrolled in the program proactively reduce their electrical consumption during such emergencies and are rewarded with financial incentives.
Large Commercial and Industrial Direct Load Control (CIDLC)
(EnergyScout™ for Business)*
With EnergyScout™ for Business, Hawaiian Electric installs a free a device that can temporarily curtail customer designated loads, typically for no more than one hour at a time. Current program participants have designated from 50 kilowatts up to 5 megawatts of curtailable load. In return, DLC participants receive monthly incentives in the form of bill credits or checks. Monthly incentives are paid regardless of whether a DR event occurs or not. When a DR event is triggered for more than one hour, participants receive an additional Energy Reduction Incentive.
DLC participants participate at two different levels: (1) Dispatch or (2) Dispatch & Under Frequency. In the Dispatch scenario, customers have 1 hour after notification to drop their load. The device Hawaiian Electric installs senses the drop in system frequency, curtails loads immediately and then sends a notice that an under frequency event has occurred.
Currently, 43 customers participate in the DLC program, representing 18.2 megawatts of controllable peak demand.

Fast Demand Response (Fast DR)
Fast DR is a new program designed to help keep the electric grid stable and prevent unplanned outages when electricity demand may exceed generation capacity.
For commercial and industrial customers who qualify, Hawaiian Electric places automatic or semi-automatic controllers on non-essential equipment.

Small Business Direct Load Control Program (SBDLC)
(EnergyScout™ for Business)**
With EnergyScout™ for Small Business, Hawaiian Electric installs a free a device that can temporarily turn off water heaters or cycle air conditioners, typically for no more than one hour at a time. Hot water stored in the tank can still be used normally and air conditioning will continue to run but for shorter periods. SBDLC participants receive a check or credit on their electric bill each month for $5 for each water heater and $5 for each ton of a/c enrolled, whether or not an event is triggered.
Events may be "dispatched" by Hawaiian Electric System Operators or events may be automatically triggered to protect the grid frequency, known as "underfrequency" events. Dispatch events may last for at least one hour and underfrequency events typically last for only a few minutes.
Currently, 161 customers participate in the SBDLC program, representing 1 megawatt of controllable peak demand.

Fast Demand Response Study
Opportunity for Hospitality Customers
The OpenADR (Open Automated Demand Response) Hospitality Project is a new part of Hawaiian Electric Company's Fast DR (demand response) Pilot Program. In collaboration with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), Hawaiian Electric is seeking hospitality industry customers in Waikiki eligible to enroll in Fast DR who are also interested in supporting new learning in the area of demand response.
EPRI and Hawaiian Electric will select 3-5 hospitality industry customers for participation in the Hospitality Study Project. Under the project, DR load management equipment will be installed to enable electrical load curtailment strategies and communication at no cost at the hospitality customer's facility. The selected customers will receive the economic benefits of Fast DR and participate in DR events. From data gathered during and after DR events, EPRI, LBNL and Hawaiian Electric will better understand DR capabilities and strategies for the hospitality industry in a hot, humid climate. We will also assess the opportunities and desire of the hospitality industry to participate in DR programs.
