PSPS: Keeping Our Visitors Safe

When you visit the Hawaiian Islands, your safety is our top priority. Hawaiian Electric uses many advanced tools to help prevent wildfires, including temporarily shutting off the power in certain areas when weather conditions create an elevated wildfire risk. This is called a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS).

Hawaiian Electric’s PSPS program applies to certain areas on the islands of Oahu, Maui, Molokai and Hawaii Island. View our PSPS Maps to see if the area where you are staying or plan to stay may possibly be impacted by a PSPS.

While these events are rare, a PSPS helps protect local communities and natural landscapes. But they may also affect travelers staying in hotels, vacation rentals, or other accommodations. This page provides essential guidance to help you stay safe and prepared if a PSPS is announced during your stay.

What to Expect

Advance Notice: Whenever possible, Hawaiian Electric will notify your host in advance of a PSPS. Stay in touch with your accommodation provider for updates.

Duration: Power outages may last several hours to a few days, depending on the situation and the time needed to ensure safety before restoring power.

Unplanned Power Outages: In some cases, the safety equipment installed on our power lines may automatically shut off the power when a wildfire threat is detected.

Please know that our goal is to minimize disruption, while maximizing safety for both residents and visitors.

Quick Tips for Tourists

  • Medical Needs: If you rely on medical equipment, ensure you have a backup power source or plan in place.
  • Travel Considerations: Check with airlines and transportation services for any disruptions.
  • Emergency Contacts: Keep a list of emergency contacts handy, including local emergency services and your accommodation provider.
  • Keep Your Devices Ready: Fully charge phones, power banks, and laptops ahead of time.

How to Prepare

Before an Outage

If a PSPS is announced, contact your host to understand their emergency plan and available resources, such as flashlights, water, and portable chargers.
