Transformer Safety Tips
Pad-mounted transformers are an integral part of the electrical grid, ensuring that electricity is safely and efficiently distributed from power plants to homes and businesses. While transformers are generally reliable, they can pose safety risks if not properly maintained or if handled incorrectly. Understanding essential transformer safety tips is crucial for homeowners, businesses, and professionals alike.
Maintain Distance

- Keep shrubs, trees and other obstructions at least 10 feet away from a pad-mounted transformer and keep labels visible.
- Keep areas surrounding a pad-mounted transformer clear so that workers can safely maintain transformers as needed.
- Stay at least 10 feet away from the equipment to avoid exposure to any hazards.
- Never touch, climb or play on a pad-mounted transformer.
- Never put fingers, sticks or other objects through cracks in the pad-mounted transformer.
- Never dig near a pad-mounted transformer. They are surrounded by underground cables. Hitting the cable could result in electrical shock or disruption of service. Always call 8-1-1 before you dig!
More Transformer Safety Tips
No unauthorized access
- Pad-mounted transformers should only be accessed by trained and authorized personnel.
- Never attempt to open or tamper with the equipment unless you are qualified to do so.
- If you come across a transformer with an open, damaged, or absent lock, please contact Hawaiian Electric at the number listed below.
Don't paint or cover
- The green paint helps electrical workers identify the transformer as having live voltage inside and to use care.
- The paint could obscure the warning sign and potentially put others at risk.

Keep clear of spills
- If you notice any oil leaks around a pad-mounted transformer, keep a safe distance and report it.
- Transformer oil is flammable and can pose a fire or health hazard.
Avoid water contact
- Never allow water to come into contact with pad-mounted transformers, such as irrigation systems. Water conducts electricity and can lead to dangerous electrical shocks.
Report strange noises or odors
- Unusual noises, such as buzzing or humming, or unusual odors around transformers should be reported to Hawaiian Electric. These signs could indicate a malfunction or potential hazard.
