Beef and Potatoes

Ingredients:

Beef and Potatoes

  • 2 tablespoons salad oil
  • 3 thin slices ginger root
  • 3/4 lb thinly sliced beef sirloin
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 3 shiitake (dried mushrooms), soaked
  • 2 large potatoes, cubed
  • 1/3 cup sake (Japanese rice wine)
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons hondashi (Japanese fish flavored soup granules)

Directions:

  1. In a skillet, heat oil and ginger.
  2. Add the beef and brown.
  3. Add onion, shiitake, and potatoes; sauté for a few minutes.
  4. Add the sake, 2 tablespoons of the soy sauce, 2 tablespoons of the sugar, and 1 1/2 teaspoons of the hondashi.
  5. Cover and simmer for 5 to 10 minutes.
  6. Add remaining 1 tablespoon soy sauce, 1 tablespoon sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon hondashi; cook for a few more minutes.

Makes 4 to 6 servings.
