Apple Cake Instructions:
Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg and beat thoroughly. Sift flour, baking powder, and salt; add alternately with the combined milk and vanilla. Pour into a greased and lined 8-inch square cake pan. Cover with layer of apple slices; sprinkle with 1 tablespoon powdered sugar and butter. Bake at 350°F for 45 minutes. Invert onto a platter; sprinkle with remaining sugar and cinnamon. Cut in squares and serve warm with Soft Custard Sauce. Makes 8 servings.
Note: Apples sink to the bottom during baking.
Soft Custard Sauce Instructions:
In a saucepan, combine eggs, sugar, and salt; mix well. Add the milk to the egg mixture; mix thoroughly. Cook over medium heat until mixture coats a spoon. Add vanilla. Serve over Apple Cake.
