Champions help to heal communities: Yoh Kawanami
Fluent in Japanese and inspired by Nitobe Inazo ( “I wish to be a bridge across the Pacific”), a pre-World War II Japanese economist, educator and diplomat, Yoh Kawanami volunteers his time and leverages his unique background on activities that further U.S.-Hawaii-Japan relations while also supporting the next generation of thought leaders. At Hawaiian Electric, Yoh leads the company’s customer-sited programs which support grid reliability and the integration of renewable resources.

Hawaiian Electric commemorates 130 years of service on Hawaii Island
The year was 1890. Light bulbs begin to illuminate the study hall and principal’s cottage of the Hilo Boarding School as the sun set. A small, water-driven dynamo installed on the school’s irrigation ditch is generating enough electricity to power 12 bare light bulbs from dusk to 10 p.m.

On July 21, I was among a small group of employees from Hawaiian Electric who were invited to observe and participate in a special gathering in Waimanalo to rebuild the walls of Pahonu Ponds, an early Hawaiian rock-walled fishpond near Kaiona Beach Park.

Happy 91st birthday King Street building!
The Hawaiian Electric Company building has quietly stood on the corner of King, Richards and Merchant streets on Oahu since 1927. Many of the neighboring buildings and surrounding roads have changed but this year marks 91 years as one of downtown Honolulu’s landmark buildings.
