Every day on my way to work, I see the deactivated Honolulu Power Plant sitting at the end of Alakea Street in downtown Honolulu, and I often wondered what the inside looked like. At the end of last year, our government and community relations, and corporate communications process area had the opportunity to tour the facility.

Occasionally, when walking through downtown or driving in the area, I see our crews and contractors hard at work, and I’m always amazed at the time and effort they put into servicing our grid. I don’t know how to fix a vault or inspect manholes to support the area, but there is one thing I know a bit more about: matcha and the many local businesses in the neighborhood that make great lattes.

Champions help to heal communities: Yoh Kawanami
Fluent in Japanese and inspired by Nitobe Inazo ( “I wish to be a bridge across the Pacific”), a pre-World War II Japanese economist, educator and diplomat, Yoh Kawanami volunteers his time and leverages his unique background on activities that further U.S.-Hawaii-Japan relations while also supporting the next generation of thought leaders. At Hawaiian Electric, Yoh leads the company’s customer-sited programs which support grid reliability and the integration of renewable resources.

Hawaiian Electric commemorates 130 years of service on Hawaii Island
The year was 1890. Light bulbs begin to illuminate the study hall and principal’s cottage of the Hilo Boarding School as the sun set. A small, water-driven dynamo installed on the school’s irrigation ditch is generating enough electricity to power 12 bare light bulbs from dusk to 10 p.m.

I grew up in the transportation business. My dad, John Brizdle, and his partner Roger Watson founded E Noa Tours 50 years ago in 1974 as they designed sightseeing tours for visitors in a seven-passenger Volkswagen van.
