POV: You’re a lightbulb in the Honolulu Electric Light Parade

This year, I had the opportunity to be the green lightbulb and walk in the annual Public Workers' Electric Light Parade on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2025, for the Honolulu City Lights opening night. Not only that, but I also somehow got my dad to agree to be the red lightbulb! Hawaiian Electric participates in the parade every year, and this was our first time attending.

The annual tradition kicks off the holiday season with a block party along Punchbowl Street, local food vendors, and live entertainment!
Before we were suited into the giant lightbulb costumes, it was great to see everyone gather and catch up before the start of the parade. I got to meet other people from different departments and see the gingerbread house float our employees prepared! The decorations looked amazing, and it was the perfect photo opportunity. Right before the parade started, we suited up into our costumes, equipped with the batteries for the actual lights and an ice pack vest to keep us cool.

We started walking from Aala Park right after the opening night tree lighting ceremony and ended at Honolulu Hale. Maneuvering was difficult at first, but with the help of my guide, I got the hang of it! It was heartwarming to hear the families that gathered to watch the parade as they shouted, "Merry Christmas!" and seemed to enjoy our float along with the giant spinning lightbulbs.

I was nervous about walking in the parade as a lightbulb, but it was such a fun experience in the end. My dad had the best time interacting with the crowd and dancing around the street while his guide chased after him trying to keep him moving forward. After arriving back at home, we watched the videos that people took of us together and couldn’t stop laughing!
I’m so glad I got to participate in the parade with a member of my family. Hearing all the classic Christmas songs played by the marching bands and seeing the outdoor displays really helped me get into the holiday spirit! If you’re looking for a fun and festive activity, I recommend visiting the Honolulu City Lights with your loved ones. The displays will be up until the end of December and are lighted from sunset to around 6 a.m. daily.
