Pet Preparedness: Building an emergency kit

May 9, 2025 | Written by Emily Miyashiro

When disaster strikes, we often focus on our own safety. We make sure to have food, water, flashlights, and other essentials that you may need in an emergency - but what about our pets?

Yuki dog

I have a 16-year-old chihuahua, Yuki, who is my best friend! We got her when I was in elementary school, and we’ve practically grown up together. Despite Yuki being an important part of my family, I never thought to prepare an emergency kit for her. It wasn’t until I started working at Hawaiian Electric that I realized how unprepared I was. At Hawaiian Electric, safety is our number one priority. We’re always being reminded to stay prepared, not just at work but in our personal lives too. This made me realize that being prepared means making sure Yuki is safe, too. That’s why, this hurricane season, I’m building an emergency kit for Yuki to ensure that she has everything she needs in case of an emergency.

According to Ready.gov, a pet emergency kit should include:

  • Food: Store at least a two-week supply.
  • Water: Store at least a two-week supply.
  • Medicine: Keep a two-week supply of medication.
  • Leash, harness and collar with ID tag attached
  • Traveling bag, crate or sturdy carrier
  • Grooming items: Include pet shampoo, brush, and nail clippers.
  • Sanitation supplies: Include pet litter and litter box, newspaper, paper towels, wipes, and plastic trash bags.
  • A picture of you and your pet together: If you become separated from your pet during an emergency, a picture of you and your pet together can help others to assist you in identifying your pet.
  • Familiar items: Include your pet’s favorite toys, treats, and bedding. Familiar items can help reduce stress for your pets.
Emergency Kit

Putting this kit together has been a good reminder that our pets rely on us for everything, including their safety. If you haven’t already done so, now is the perfect time to start preparing your pet emergency kit. It may be time consuming but when disaster strikes, you’ll be glad you prepared ahead of time - I know I’ll be. I’m relieved to know that Yuki has everything she needs in case of an emergency.

We hope you and your furry friends stay safe and prepared this upcoming hurricane season!
