Downtown Honolulu gets a new payment drop box

June 27, 2025 | Written by Donica Kaneshiro

With rampant online scams, I can understand why many customers still visit our payment drop boxes, as they have for decades.

While I don’t pay many bills with physical checks anymore, I still tend to be cautious about linking my bank account information to make online payments. For years, I used my bank’s online bill pay service for its pay-anytime convenience, but chose not to set up automatic Hawaiian Electric payments, so I was forced to notice the variations in the bill that comes to my email each month.

For my family, the monthly reminder of our energy usage helped us to be more diligent about saving electricity and maybe open a window instead of reaching for the AC remote control.

But after a recent move, I felt secure in the idea that I have instilled those energy-saving habits into my kids and confident in Hawaiian Electric’s cybersecurity measures, so I switched to automatic bill payments. I can still monitor my energy usage on my monthly bill or through the My Energy Use portal, but I no longer need to remember to log into my account to pay my bill.

It’s helpful that Hawaiian Electric has so many ways to pay your bill, so you can find just the right fit to meet your family’s needs.

Hawaiian Electric has been at the forefront of customer convenience since our first bill payment drop box opened in 1952, allowing customers to pay their bill outside of regular office hours.

Today, those payment boxes are still open in Kahului, Hilo, Kona, Waimea and our new Honolulu location at Alii Place at 1099 Alakea St. (replacing the payment box at the American Savings Bank Tower, which will close on July 11), but they are not the only way to pay your bill.

The ways to pay your bill have expanded with options in person, by phone, by mail or online:

  • One-time payment or automatic monthly bill payment: Visit the Online Customer Service Center.
  • Credit/debit card & digital payments: Use Paymentus to pay with your credit card, debit card, eCheck, PayPal, Google Pay and other digital payments (fees may apply).
  • Pay by phone: Call Paymentus at 1–888–826–5006 for immediate payment (fees may apply).
  • Pay by mail: Send a check or money order to Hawaiian Electric’s designated mailing addresses on Oahu, Maui County and Hawaii Island.
  • Pay in person: Visit a participating Western Union agent location for immediate payment (fees may apply).

The many methods ensure that each customer can find the most

convenient option to meet their specific situation and preferences.
