Ingredients:

Ono Hamburger Steak

Gravy:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 2 large onions, sliced
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons flour

Hamburger:

  • 2 pieces day-old bread
  • 1/4 cup low-fat milk
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 small onion, grated
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 cups low-sodium beef broth, divided

Directions:

Gravy:

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, warm butter and oil.
  2. Add onions, salt and pepper.
  3. Cook until onions are caramelized, 20 to 25 minutes.
  4. Sprinkle flour over onions; stir to blend.
  5. Remove from heat; set aside.

Hamburger:

  1. In a small bowl; soak bread in milk; set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, combine beef and egg.
  3. Stir in bread mixture, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, mayonnaise, oyster sauce, onion, salt and pepper.
  4. Form into 8 patties.
  5. In a separate skillet, heat oil over high heat.
  6. Brown patties; cook on medium-high heat until 3/4 done, about 15 minutes, flip, then cook until done.
  7. Transfer to a plate; keep warm.
  8. Pour 1/2 cup broth into skillet, scraping any browned bits in skillet.
  9. Add caramelized onions.
  10. Stir in remaining broth until thickened.
  11. Return hamburger patties to skillet.
  12. Heat through.

Serves 8.

Tip: To make a loco moco, serve with a sunnyside egg over hamburger, a scoop of rice, and cover with gravy.

This recipe is WAY too wet! You can barely form it into a patty and then cooking it turns into a pile of mush like a spaghetti sauce. I've made it twice now, exactly as written, same result. I ended up having to add 6 more slices of dry breadcrumbs and it still just barely held and crumbled when flipping. Hard pass on this recipe.
