Hawaiian Electric to upgrade equipment in Chinatown; overnight outage planned for Thursday

Lane and road closures will affect traffic, parking

HONOLULU, Aug. 8, 2018 – Hawaiian Electric crews will be upgrading the electrical distribution system in Chinatown, requiring a planned outage and road closures starting Thursday evening.

Crews will replace utility poles, transformers and conductors, as well as string new power lines. The work is being done to improve service reliability and provide capacity for future growth in Chinatown.

About 100 businesses and 50 residential customers will be affected by the outage from 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, to 6 a.m. Friday, Aug. 10. Those customers have been notified about the outage.

Customers who have not been contacted by Hawaiian Electric through a letter, phone call or visit will not experience an outage.

The road closures are as follows:

  • Thursday 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Friday:
    • Road closures: Maunakea Street from N. Beretania Street to about Hotel Street; Smith Street from Pauahi Street to N. Beretania Street; Nuuanu Avenue from Chaplain Lane to Pauahi Street; N. Pauahi Street from Maunakea Street to Bethel Street
    • Lane closure: left lane of N. Beretania Street from before Smith Street through intersection of Maunakea Street
