HONOLULU, Oct. 30, 2018 – As part of the construction to install new 46-kilovolt cables under the Ala Wai Canal, Kaiolu Street in Waikiki will be closed to through traffic at Ala Wai Boulevard 24 hours a day, starting on Thursday, Nov. 1, and continuing through Nov. 23, possibly longer.

A contractor working for Hawaiian Electric Company will position horizontal directional drilling equipment on the mauka end of Kaiolu Street, blocking the flow of traffic to Ala Wai Boulevard. Work is planned between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

During the closure at the mauka end of Kaiolu Street, local traffic may enter and exit Kaiolu Street at Kuhio Avenue. Parking will be restricted on Kaiolu Street to allow the normally one-way street to accommodate two-way traffic.

Message boards have been positioned on Kaiolu Street. Traffic control signs and cones will direct motorists.
