Gau (Chinese rice dessert)

Ingredients:

Gau (Chinese rice dessert)

  • 1 pound Chinese slab sugar (available at Asian markets) or brown sugar
  • 2 1/2 cups hot water
  • 1 pound mochiko (Japanese rice flour)
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil

Directions:

  1. Combine sugar and water in pan, heat at medium-low to dissolve.
  2. Remove from heat and cool.
  3. Slowly mix mochiko and water mixture to make a smooth paste.
  4. Add oil to paste.
  5. Pour batter into prepared 9-inch round pan and steam until done (about 4 hours).
  6. Gau is done when you stick a toothpick in and it comes out clean.

Makes 16 servings.
