Delivery of generators is a key milestone for the Schofield Barracks Generating Station
Release Date: 7/11/2017
HONOLULU, July 11, 2017 - Contractors for Hawaiian Electric Company will start to deliver six 159-ton generators, one per day, on July 14 to the Schofield Barracks Generating Station, located on U.S. Army land off Kunia Road in Wahiawa.
The delivery route for the large generators begins at Kalaeloa Barbers Point Harbor, travels through Kapolei to Fort Weaver Road, briefly goes onto the H-1 Freeway, then heads north on Kunia Road to Schofield Barracks.
Because each generator is an over-sized load, the hauling vehicles, accompanied by Honolulu Police Department escort vehicles, will take a route that avoids overpasses. The convoy will need to make a U-turn on Fort Weaver Road and on H-1, which will require brief traffic stoppages.
The generator deliveries will occur late at night and into the early morning hours to minimize the impact on traffic. The hauling vehicles, traveling at about 5 mph, will depart Barbers Point Harbor each evening around 10 p.m. and will arrive at Schofield Barracks by 5 a.m. The scheduled delivery nights are July 14 through 16 and July 18 through 20, and possibly July 21.
At night, the hauling vehicles will leave Schofield Barracks for the return trip to Barbers Point Harbor. The vehicles, traveling about 10 mph, will take a direct route, requiring no traffic stoppage, southbound on Kunia Road to Farrington Highway, then westbound through Kapolei to southbound Kalaeloa Boulevard.
The 50-megawatt (MW) Schofield plant is being built on approximately eight acres that Hawaiian Electric is leasing from the Army. The company will own and operate the plant, running it on a mixture of biofuel and conventional fuel.
The plant is expected to be in service by spring 2018, serving all of Hawaiian Electric's customers. In the event of an emergency, the plant can be isolated from the grid to provide secure power to the Army's facilities at Schofield Barracks, Wheeler Airfield and Field Station Kunia.
