Crews restore majority of storm-related outages
Primary focus on isolated, scattered outages on Hawaii Island

HONOLULU, Noon, Dec. 9, 2021 – About 3,000 customers across Hawaiian Electric’s service territory who experienced an extended outage following the recent storm had electricity restored thanks to nonstop work by repair crews, technicians and system operators on Oahu, Maui and Hawaii Island. As of noon, about 950 customers remain without power, mainly in the Puna and Kona areas of Hawaii Island.
- Hawaii Island: More than 2,200 customers have been restored with roughly 900 outages remaining across Hawaii Island. Most of the outages that have already been identified should be restored today. Any additional outages identified during assessments today will be addressed by tomorrow, if not sooner, with full restoration expected by noon on Saturday. This does not include customers who have damage on their property that would need to be repaired before crews can restore electricity.
- Work today will focus on: Eden Roc Estates, Leilani Estates, Nanawale, Hawaiian Beaches, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Ainaloa, Kurtistown, Fern Acres, Volcano, Kailua, Kaloko, Holualoa, Captain Cook, Kealia, and Wood Valley.
- Maui: Crews continue to respond to about 35 individual pocket storm-related outages remaining in the Upcountry and Kanaio area today. The Haleakala summit area will remain without power for an extended period of time.
- Crews have completed emergency repairs to a pole that was damaged during the recent storm. About 1,900 customers from Peahi to East Maui were without electricity while the repairs were made, but all were restored by 3 a.m.
- Oahu: One building in downtown Honolulu will likely be without power until tomorrow. Equipment inside the vault it receives electricity from was severely damaged and will need to be repaired and fully dried out before it can be re-energized.
