Home Energy Challenge

Teaching Students How To Save Energy for the Past Decade!

It's all about making wise decisions and not wasting electricity - that's how elementary school students and their families have reduced their electricity use at home for the past 10 years. Hawaiian Electric Company and the Hawaii State Department of Education have had great educational experiences with the Home Energy Challenge; a contest which motivates energy conservation practices in the students' homes.

$19,000 in Prizes & STEM Education for All

The schools whose families achieve the highest percentage of reduction in electricity use from October through March win cash prizes of $10,000, $6,000 and $3,000. Students learn about science and conserving energy while helping the environment and their families. The cash prizes are just the tip of the ice berg! The Home Energy Challenge provides public school participants with STEM educational material, booklets, exciting videos, live presentations, special events, monthly activity sheets, and optional sub-contests like Energy Conservation Projects and drawing contests to keep the momentum up from October - March.

Congratulations to the 2016/17 $10,000 grand prize winner, Aina Haina Elementary pictured at the top of the page. After receiving the BIG $10,000 check, the students got to enjoy Honolulu Theater for Youth's production of Home.

Kumu Kit Winner

One family whose name is drawn from all the families who reduced their home energy use during the contest period wins a $8,500 photovoltaic H2O Solar Water Heating System, courtesy of Kumu Kit. The H2O water heater uses the light of the sun to make the household water hot. The winning family(above) came from Mililani Waena Elementary. This year, that lucky family came from Hahaione Elementary.

At the end of the school year, four schools win $1,000 each for their Energy Conservation Projects. As an optional project, schools document their energy conservation efforts during the year and share their great ideas and projects in song, videos, school newscasts, books and more. The winning elementary schools this year are: Maemae, Enchanted Lake, Aina Haina, and Nuuanu.
