Step Up Program

Stepping up our commitment to education

What qualities will the workforce of tomorrow need to ensure the continued success of Hawaii's businesses?

Recognizing the importance of an educated, local workforce, Hawaiian Electric, Maui Electric, and Hawaii Electric Light companies are partnering with the Hawaii State Board of Education (BOE) in their BOE Step Up Diploma campaign which promotes college and career readiness for Hawaii's high school students. To achieve a BOE Step Up Diploma, high school students must complete a rigorous academic curriculum with four credits in math (algebra I and II, and geometry), science (three credits of science, including two laboratory classes such as biology, chemistry, or physics) and one-half credit in expository writing. Additionally students must complete a senior project. The first BOE Step Up Diploma will be awarded in 2013.

As part of our partnership, Hawaiian Electric, Maui Electric, and Hawaii Electric Light have pledged to support BOE Step Up Diploma holders.

  • Candidates who apply for a Bargaining Unit job will automatically be invited to the next step in the hiring process (job sample test or interview) after successfully passing entry level tests.
  • Internships will be offered to Step Up students between their junior and senior year, subject to resource availability.

The Step Up campaign aligns Hawaii with a national movement to raise the value of a high school diploma by increasing standards, assessments, and curriculum, and by aligning expectations with the demands of postsecondary education and careers. To date, 35 states have adopted a more challenging diploma based on national standards.
