Apprenticeship Program
Hawaiian Electric is committed to developing the next generation of skilled journeymen. Registered with the State of Hawaii Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, our program provides structured, hands-on training combined with classroom instruction to build industry expertise and long-term career success.
The Apprenticeship Program includes:
- Paid on-the-job training
- Structured classroom instruction

- Mentorship from experienced journeymen
- Industry-recognized certification upon completion
- Strong emphasis on safe work practices and the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure all tasks are performed safely

Apprentice Program Eligibility
Applicants will go through a screening process, including pre-employment testing and job sample testing, and be required to meet the following qualifications:
- 18 years or older
- High school diploma or GED
- Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
- Ability to identify and distinguish the difference between colors, including shades, hues, and tints.
- Physically capable of performing the essential functions of the apprenticeship program with or without reasonable accommodation and without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of the individual or others.
- Able to train, integrate and perform as a team member.
Getting Started
- High School Diploma or GED – Obtain an electronic copy or official school transcript. Get it ready for application submissions.
- Resume Preparation – Prepare a resume that highlights your education, transferable skills, and any other work experience. Resume examples tailored to pre-apprenticeship programs are available online.

Prepare for Selection Testing – Read about the different programs, look up what a career in each program would be like, and determine which program you are interested in. Look up related exam prep courses online for the apprentice program you choose. Prepare for testing by practicing sample questions to build confidence and increase your score.
