Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Reduction

This page contains scorecards related to GHG reduction, which are further described below:

  • GHG Emissions Scorecard
  • GHG Intensity Scorecard

GHG Emissions Scorecard

The GHG emissions scorecard reports emissions in carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions per year in metric tons from all sources that supply electricity to the Oahu, Maui County and Hawaii Island grids on a consolidated basis as reported to the Hawaii Department of Health (DoH) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and reflects emissions both including and excluding biogenic CO2.1 For additional information on GHG emissions, please click here to view Hawaiian Electric Industries’ (HEI) consolidated Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Reports.

Metric: GHG emissions in CO2e emissions per year in metric tons, reflecting emissions that both include and exclude biogenic CO2

Target: A straight-line reduction from 2019 GHG emissions to the 2045 target of carbon neutrality

Reporting Frequency: Annual

1 Biogenic sources include the following:
Oahu: HPOWER, Airport Emergency Power Facility (biodiesel beginning in 2017), Campbell Industrial Park (biodiesel in 2011-2018), Schofield (biodiesel beginning in 2018)
Maui County: Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company (2005-2016)
Hawaii Island: Hamakua Energy (biodiesel beginning in 2020)

GHG Intensity Scorecard

The GHG intensity scorecard reports emissions intensity per year in grams/kWh, which is calculated by absolute emissions divided by total kWh generated (as reported for the RPS-A PIM), and reflects emissions intensity both including and excluding biogenic CO2.

Metric: Emissions intensity in CO2e per year in grams/kWh, reflecting emissions that both include and exclude biogenic CO2

Target: A straight-line reduction from 2019 carbon intensity levels to the 2045 target of carbon neutrality

Reporting Frequency: Annual
