Achieve 100 percent renewable energy
Our goal is 100 percent renewable energy for electricity by 2045. By achieving this, Hawaii will greatly reduce its dependence on imported oil. This will lower electric bills and provide a cleaner environment for future generations.
Hawaii is the first state in the nation to set a renewable energy goal of 100%. But the utilities in Hawaii can't make this happen alone. We must continue with the collaborative efforts that have gotten us this far, involving the utilities, state and local governments, business partners, communities and customers like you.

Why do we need renewable energy?
The Hawaiian Electric Companies are committed to transitioning from imported-oil based energy to low-cost renewable energy.
The model we followed for decades was to generate energy at centralized power plants and distribute it to homes and businesses. This made more sense when oil prices were low and renewable energy was expensive. But this model no longer makes economic sense. Oil is a diminishing resource, so its price will increase over time. As renewable energy technology improves, its price decreases.
Replacing imported oil with renewable energy will have far-reaching economic and environmental benefits. We'll keep billions of dollars that used to be spent on imported oil here in Hawaii. And as we move toward 100% renewable energy, we'll greatly reduce Hawaii's carbon footprint.
How will we achieve our goals?
At the Hawaiian Electric Companies, we're moving into the future with a sense of urgency. To achieve 100% renewable energy requires us to rethink everything we do. And we're following a plan that transforms the way we do business.
- We'll continue to add distributed solar, including rooftop PV and grid-scale solar farms, in a way that's sustainable and fair for everyone.
- We'll continue to modernize the grid so that it can accept many different forms of renewable energy, including solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, biofuels, waste-to-energy and hydro.
- We'll continue to work on behalf of our customers, to find ways to lower your electric bills and bring you more choices.
