Trust for Public Land Hosts A Day on the Land at MAO Organic Farms

Today, Trust for Public Land (TPL) brought together over 130 community volunteers for its annual A Day on the Land at MAO Organic Farms. The event invited participants from across 11 local companies to work the land and learn about the community-led food movement to care for the aina and improve Hawaii’s self-sufficiency.

Based on wind and humidity conditions forecasted for the remainder of the weekend, Hawaiian Electric has ended its wildfire safety watch but will continue to closely monitor the weather.

Wildfire safety watch: Hawaiian Electric monitoring risk conditions

Hawaiian Electric is monitoring high winds and dry conditions on Maui and Hawaii Island, which may lead to an increased risk of wildfires. At this time, Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) is in a “watch” condition, meaning that if weather conditions intensify in the next 24 to 48 hours Hawaiian Electric may proactively shut off power in communities with high exposure to wildfire risk.

Hawaiian Electric tests goat grazing as vegetation management option for landowners

As part of its ongoing wildfire safety strategy, Hawaiian Electric completed a successful demonstration on Maui using livestock as another vegetation management option for landowners and communities. The company recently partnered with Surfing Goat Dairy who works with property owners to determine if a site is suitable for the animals to help with vegetation control along with setting up and monitoring the work.

Due to ongoing drought conditions, everyone should be prepared for the possibility of wildfires this summer. As first responders, emergency management agencies and landowners prepare for a dry summer, Hawaiian Electric is doing its part by readying its Public Safety Power Shutoff program to reduce the risk of ignitions from its equipment in dry and windy conditions.
