Hawaiian Electric’s Battery Bonus program, which provides a cash incentive and bill credits to customers who add battery storage to their rooftop solar systems, has reached a milestone on Oahu with 30% of its allotted capacity filled.

The AES Waikoloa Solar + Storage project is being tested up to 85% of its capacity, producing clean energy for Hawaiian Electric to provide the Hawaii Island grid with electricity at 9 cents per kilowatt-hour, one of the lowest rates for energy in the state.

Hawaiian Electric has selected seven solar projects on Oahu, Hawaii Island and Maui to be the first on each island to offer the shared solar program (also known as community-based renewable energy or CBRE) to help lower the electric bills of customers who meet low- and moderate-income (LMI) levels and are unable to install privately-owned rooftop solar.

Pre-orders launch today for “Pilina – Connecting through the rich, local flavors of the islands,” a 150-page cookbook published by Hawaiian Electric employees as a fundraiser to benefit United Way agencies across its service areas. Pilina, meaning “to make connections” in the Hawaiian language, features more than 120 recipes contributed by employees. Priced at $15, this year’s edition features a foldable stand with spiral-bound top for easy flipping to a favorite recipe.
