4 p.m. update: Crews to work into the night to restore power
Improved weather conditions aid repairs
Release Date: 1/31/2025
HONOLULU, Jan. 31, 2025 – More than 200 Hawaiian Electric field employees and contractors made significant restoration progress today following the severe thunderstorms and powerful winds that swept through the island chain. Improved weather conditions have aided visibility; however, challenging conditions such as flooding, downed trees and rough terrain have added time to some repairs, especially in rural areas.
As of 4 p.m.,
- Oahu: Crews restored power to more than 3,100 customers today. About 1,650 customers are without power in pockets across Oahu. The Wiliwilinui Ridge hiking trail will be temporarily closed tomorrow from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. as crews make emergency repairs in the area.
- Maui County: Crews are working to restore 1,400 customers in Haiku and pockets of Upcountry and Kihei.
- Hawaii Island: Less than 200 customers are without power in pockets of Hilo, Honokaa, Kohala, Holualoa, Honaunau, Kealakehe, Konawaena, Kau, Pahala, and Naalehu. The majority of the outages are in the upper and lower Puna areas.
Because of the dynamic nature of the storm system, outage numbers represent a snapshot in time and are subject to change as additional customers are restored and more outages occur, sometimes in the same area. Customers can track current outages on the outage map at hawaiianelectric.com and our mobile app. You can also report an outage with this tool.
Our priorities for restoration emphasize safety and essential community services. Restoration also will take place in a manner designed to affect the greatest number of customers first. Depending on the type of damage, some customers may need to hire an electrician to make repairs to their equipment before we can safely reconnect electric service to their homes.
